Through the Bible in One Year

What I like about the Lectionary is that it keeps me mindful of the rhythm of the church calendar and in sync with other believers around the world.  But frankly I only have private devotions Monday through Friday.  By using the daily reading from the Lectionary for the past few years combined with Billy Graham’s practice of reading a chapter of Proverbs corresponding to the date, I have missed reading through the Bible in a year.  The daily readings also return repeatedly to a limited set of Psalms and I like to read through all of the Psalms more frequently.

I made the decision to read through the Bible annually without changing my Monday through Friday routine.  I will read through the book of Psalms every two months and continue reading Proverbs as I have always done.

My hope is that I will still read the Lectionary for the principal service on Sunday which will keep me in tune with the greater church and the Christian year.

I put together a spreadsheet that tells me what to read today and what the Lecitonary reading will be for the coming Sunday.  The reason I’m sharing this is, in case anyone else would like to use this tool, I have made the spreadsheet available for download.

The Christian year begins this Sunday, November 30, the First Sunday of Advent, so I wanted to get this out for any of you interested in reading through the Bible and staying in touch with the Christian calendar in this coming year.  May God bless you as you study his word – and Happy Thanksgiving!
