Thanks for the advice. Here in L.A., I'm sure to find something on Craigslist.

Needing a reciever is especially a bummer though, because my setup is so clean now. My Acer Revo is mounted to the back of the flat panel that sits nicely on a long cabinet (with the server inside and the router mounted on back). The only other things on top are the small L and R speakers. A receiver is going to look... clunky.

Looking forward to more articles of yours. I am also enjoying the reading at avforums, in case you aren't aware of that place, it's AV Geek Central. Cheers.

unplggd just wrote about the same issue. They recommended self-powered speakers that were IR capable but they cost as much as a receiver. There's a guy on craigslist near me with a functioning Sony receiver for only $50 and another with an Onkyo for $100. Maybe you could find something like that? (Oh, and I haven't given up on XBMC. I just don't use it on the HTPC. It is still on my laptop.)

Wow. I was just starting to learn about XBMC for my new HTPC setup. I was using your tutorials to get started. Looks like you abandoned it.

To be honest, it was looking like it was going to be a huge pain for a semi-geek like me. I don't want to learn linux (practically) just to watch TV and movies.

I am going to give WMC a try. And I'll keep checking out your blog. Hopefully you have some more stuff about your gear and your setup in here.

I have a new Sony KDL32L504 as our TV and the darn thing has only fixed volume, so my simple powered speakers (no receivr/amp needed in our small apartment) is useless because the TV remote cannot control volume when you are using the TV's audio out jacks. It's silly, but I am stumped.
