You Should Go To The Movies With Me

image That is because I am on a roll.  I admit My Life in Ruins about ruined me for movies, but since then I’ve seen three very good movies in a row.  Other than Richard Dreyfuss, My Life in Ruins had no acting anywhere to be found.  Is Greece beautiful?  Yes, of course, but even the cinematography failed to measure up.  For those people who think that successful romantic comedy is just a matter of following the formula, My Life in Ruins, is a cautionary tale.

My next movie was The Taking of Pelham 123.  This re-make was totally engrossing.  In case we had forgotten, Denzel Washington once again demonstrated that he has the chops of a great dramatic actor.  While John Travolta has been better, even a subpar Travolta exceeds most actors.  Get your popcorn and find your seat early.  You won’t be steppin’ out of the theater during this one.

1. Make a list 2. Make another list

iPhoneNotes Lifehack has a post on the topic 9 Lists to Keep Updated.  They suggest:  things I want, gift ideas, got a minute?, watch/read/listen, big hairy audaciaus goals (BHAGs), bucket list, don’t forget, great ideas, and the lowly grocery list.  I found their ideas interesting, which surprises no one because I am a list fanatic.  I have files listing loved ones lists of favorite things, places, and activities.  You get the point.  I have lists of other peoples lists.  So, what lists do you keep updated?

Here are some lists I keep or think are important:

I Got the Fever

John Travolta Back in the 1980′s I had a motorcycle wreck. After 27 surgeries my left leg was saved, but my knee was virtually fused. I had less than 5 degrees of flexion. Two years ago my knee was replaced. I still lack the soft tissue for full flexion, but 41 beats 5 degrees.

Here is the funny part. I have had quite a bit of trouble learning to walk. You spend a few decades twisting your body around to drag along a peg leg and it is hard to move properly. Improvement started to come by exercising on the Nordic Track ski machine. It built up muscles long in disuse. Continue reading I Got the Fever

A Star Is Born (Two Hundred Years Ago)

Two hundred years ago today, Felix Mendellsohn was born. Until Wagner’s successful anti-Semitic attack on Jewish composers, Mendellsohn was easily the world’s most popular composer. While I remember reading his biography, what I remember most was putting the Scottish Symphony on the record player to help me fall asleep at night. ‘burgh’s Big Ben more famous than London’s?

My favorite ride at Kennywood Park was the Jack Rabbit. As a child, I thought that roller coaster was the most deliciously scary experience of the summer. Last night was another wild Pittsburgh ride, as only last minute heroics by Big Ben and San Antonio Holmes (who modestly stated in an interview after the [...]

The Soul on the Wall

The Soul on the Wall is a poem about a sense of place.  The place in which our spirit feels most at home on this earth.  I read my poem, following  the break. Continue reading The Soul on the Wall

Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist

Despite my love for music, I have a chronic habit of torturing it with my attempts to produce it for myself.  Thanks to mp3′s and my need to commute an hour a day, I have become a huge fan of downloading and playing back playlists custom tailored to my tastes.  It is as awkward for me [...]

Books: A Review

I forget where I saw it talked up.  I think it was USA Today.  With a name like Books: A Memoir,I didn’t need much encouragement.  I am a lifelong bibliophile and eagerly placed my name on the waiting list at the library.  As soon as I finished Seaview Inn, the book which I had been reading, [...]

Make your own kind of music

This old dog has been playing the guitar since he was 10.  Recently I made two purchases.  One was a new keyboard and the other was a new guitar.  (I like to buy a new guitar every 20 years or so.)  My greatest area of weakness in playing the guitar has been rhythm and consistency.  The [...]
