Good Jobs

Go to Engadget story

Steve Jobs has long been one of the most creative minds in technology. Like most fans, I was thrilled that he was able to take the stage and make yesterday’s big announcement of the iPad 2. He really hit the nail on the head at the end of yesterday’s talk (as reported by Engadget). His gift is to go beyond technical specifications and meld science and technology with the liberal arts and humanities.

I had pretty well ruled out an iPad as my next tablet. In my continuously generated tablet specification comparo spreadsheet, the iPad 2 appears to win in only one category. At 0.34 inches thin it blows away all of the 0.5″ wannabes and embarrasses the Galaxy Tab at 0.47″. The resolution of the display lags behind. The resolution of the finally added cameras is embarrassingly bad, VGA front and an unspecified (usually a bad sign) rear camera. I had hoped that when they updated the iSight webcam on the MacBook Pro it was presaging a similar camera for the iPad 2. Disappointment. My phone shoots 720p. And Facetime videochat is still limited to other folks on Apple products.

A couple of random points. The screen resolution didn’t change leaving the pixel density at a far worse level than competitors. I care about that, but frankly when watching TV or movies on the iPad I’ve always been impressed by the picture quality. Never once have I been disappointed. The internet is awash with criticism of the Xoom pricing. But keep in mind that by the time you equip your iPad with 3G, a USB/SD card and HDMI connector, they are exactly the same price.

So why am I still considering the iPad 2 instead of the Xoom, G-Slate, or Galaxy Tab 8.9? Rationally, I could agree with Gina Trapani that is because it is a second generation proven platform. But the truth is that I am mesmerized by the apps. Android has some great apps, but I want iMovie, Garage Band, Netflix, and Hulu Plus. The BBC iPlayer is expected to come to the iPad by the end of summer holding the promise of watching the upcoming Doc Martin season as it happens (legally) on my tablet. See, what Jobs was talking about? Tech + Arts = Happy Customer.

Like you, I have many sides. Which side will choose my next tablet? Will the engineer pick the best specs and trust that the apps will follow (LG G-Slate)? Will the musician-videographer pick the apps and accept lower specs as the necessary price (iPad 2)? Even I don’t know the answer to that question.

iPad 2 + Steve

Go to Apple site

Steve comes back to present the killer new iPad 2. Here I am waiting for the G-Slate, when “boom” the iPad 2 comes and just turns my thinking upside down. Front-facing camera? check. Rear-facing camera? check. And yawn. Just catch up, right?

But is Stevie done? You bet he isn’t. How about video editing? photo booth? and most fantabulous of all, GARAGE BAND!!! Yes, I can torture people with my music portably now. Awwweeesssoommmeee. There were some nice music apps already, but Garage Band? It is off the hook.

Now admittedly you still need an adapter for an SD card, but, you now can wirelessly sync with iTunes. No more DavDrop + dropbox required.

Waiting to hear back from @bytemarks whether the videoconferencing on Skype is working well. I don’t have anyone to FaceTime with, so I really need/want Skype or Google videoconferencing.

That Steve Jobs. Just when I think I’m out . . .

Amazon Versus Netflix

Go to Amazon site

Are you an Amazon addict? You can admit it to me. I’m one, too. In fact, I’m a Prime member because I just can’t wait to see that smiley box on the front porch.

Well, if quick delivery and stellar customer service aren’t enough, how about a Netflix-challenging video streaming service added in for free?

Starting today if you pay for your Prime membership, Amazon is throwing in free video streaming. This is the coolest thing to happen to movie watching since Netflix added surround sound to their PS3 app.

I won’t be cutting off my easy-peasy Netflix service just yet. I think Netflix just witnessed a guerrilla entering their territory, however.

As a side note, family members who share your Prime membership will have to pay up on their own to enjoy this new service )-: Also, their library is limited to about 5,000 titles according to the Amazon splash page.

XBMC Pipeline

Go to XBMC site

XBMC, the little black dress that makes your HTPC look sexy, is laying the groundwork for future development. Their latest post details the nuts and bolts. But it is future features that keep those of us in the end-user category on the edge of our theater seats.

I’m not willing to jailbreak my wife’s iPad, even if I could ever get my fingers on it. But XBMC on the iPad looks very inviting and they are continuing to develop tools so that “skinners” can enhance the touch interface with XBMC. It isn’t clear whether this will translate into touch screen computers.

One topic that keeps XBMC users constantly on the edge of confusion is the relationship between File and Library views. XBMC is working to unify those two making the interface more intuitive.

We love our XBMC and can’t wait to see what they deliver next.

Xoom Treated Unfairly

Is anyone else getting miffed about people comparing the $800 Xoom to the $499 iPad? Is $800 too much? Probably. But a 32GB + 3G forever iPad is $729. The 32GB Xoom with 3G upgradeable to 4G is $800. So it is $70 more than the equivalent iPad. What does one get for those 70 dollars? Front and rear facing cameras that can be used to video chat in Google or shoot HD movies, a dual core processor, a slot for up to an additional 32GB of storage, HDMI out,  Flash (although there are rumors that Flash may not be activated until spring), and a higher pixel density display.  I hate that it costs so much, but I can’t deny that fairly compared to the iPad, the Xoom looks like a solid value.  Now if only Android had Netflix and Hulu, I’d be seriously tempted.
