“Let the Sea Resound”

As news sources like USA Today tout headlines like, “La. marshes damaged by oil, but surprisingly resilient” and Fox & Friends Sunday says its not the oil killing turtles but low oxygen in the water and ABC News likewise downplaying the environmental impact, voices speaking the truth are rarely heard.  As a Christian environmentalist, it is [...]

Obama’s Katrina?

How much worse can it get for the Gulf region? Nature strikes with Katrina and the government fails to adequately respond. BP fails to safely drill and once again the government sits on its hands. Will this be to the Obama administration what Katrina was to the Bush administration? Could our government [...]

Offshore Drilling is Safe?

It seems ironic that a Texan would not approve more offshore drilling, but the supposedly more environmentally sensitive current president has given the green light.  According to the AP “No oil appeared to be leaking from a drilling rig that exploded and sank in the Gulf of Mexico, the Coast Guard said Friday, though officials were trying to contain [...]

Windmill Prodigy

Thanks to Wired Science, I learned of a 14 year old boy in a remote African village who should be an inspiration for all of us.  William Kamkwamba noted the wind in Malawi and thought he could rig something up to power a light to read by.  This boy, who had been forced to drop out [...]

Return of the osprey

Last summer I enjoyed the fishing antics of a belted kingfisher as he swooped back and forth over the lake just off the end of our dock. This spring as I started walking from the road past our camper to the lake I saw what I thought was a bald eagle and then realized it [...]

Walk much?

walk-sign

I stumbled upon an essay worth reading – just as soon as you get back from your walk.   Take a Walk by Bill Bunn gives what I hope is an only half-serious rationale for returning to our (assuming the reader is human) main mode of conveyance.  Since it is not unusual for me to share boring details about my latest walk around the same lake, I thought I would offer this link to Bill’s essay as an olive branch to my long-suffering readers. Continue reading Walk much?

Spring Breaks Out

Get the Flash Player to see this player.

Spring takes on a different meaning when one lives in a cooler climate. New life is breaking out all around us in North Carolina. I hope you enjoy this little video of the flowers and birds I observed this weekend. Some were taken in our yard [...]

NextGen Gallery Slideshow

Click for Album

In the first post of this series, I talked about my decision-making with regard to how to format my blog. Generally, each post has a left-justified thumbnail with a graphic element. The primary elements include an external image, a video, or a slideshow of photos that integrated into a NextGen Gallery on my blog. Typically I create a box (division), using HTML which allows me to control that the contents be left justified on the page, the size of the graphic, and justification of text within the box. This slideshow illustrates a box Continue reading NextGen Gallery Slideshow

Geese gone

I saw a couple of birds on my walk I have yet to identify.  Nothing unusual there.  What was unusual was that I had walked well over a mile without seeing a single goose.  Usually folks here complain about geese hissing at them as they walk and goose guana everywhere.  They are also quite noisy.  Their [...]

The Lake (again)

We had a bit of rain this morning which had the ground soaked and the lake level almost up to the trail.  Although I waded through a flock of juncos early on, the area was strangely silent and my expectations were low.  It was interesting to me to note that on the east end of the lake the juncos were sharing their space with a tufted titmouse and a chickadee.
